Honoring Our Service Members and Veterans

VIETNAM 50 COMMEMORATION

Presque Isle Chapter, NSDAR, has honored hundreds of area U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. National Guard veterans with the Vietnam 50 Commemoration certificate and lapel pin.

Vietnam 50 Commemoration’s primary mission, as penned by Congress, is to thank and honor our veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the nation.

NSDAR, the Department of Defense, and the Vietnam War 50 Commemoration are commemorative partners and Presque Isle Chapter is a part of the effort to assist and support a grateful nation in thanking and honoring our Vietnam War veterans, 1955-1975.

Presque Isle Chapter, NSDAR, honored brothers who served in Vietnam with Vietnam 50 Commemoration certificates and lapel pins. They were part of CROP Hunger Walk, Erie County, and are pictured with the chairperson of the event, held on Presque Isle State Park. Some members of our chapter also participated in this walk.
Project Patriot Committee
Presque Isle Chapter, DAR, sends hundreds of cards for Birthdays and Holidays to our Deployed Service Men and Women around the world. Members often gather to fold "pocket flags", which are given to Veterans and Active-Duty personnel.

In 1913, Presque Isle Regent Sarah A. Reed and other members of the chapter met with Captain Morrison aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara. Captain Morrison's mother, Missouri Bliss Morrison, was the chapter's first Regent.

The efforts of Presque Isle Chapter, DAR, were instrumental in the raising and restoration of the U.S. Brig Niagara, which is berthed at the Erie Bayfront and still sails toady.

buried in Lakeside Cemetery

What is a "Real Daughter"?

A Real Daughter is the daughter of a Revolutionary War Patriot, who joined Daughters of the American Revolution.

Margaret Eleanor Hoppock was the daughter of Revolutionary War Private Philip Johnson of New York, who served in Washington's Army.

Margaret married her second husband, Joel Hoppock, in 1869, and they moved to Erie around 1790. Margaret joined DAR in 1914, and was buried in Erie's Lakeside Cemetery upon her death in 1915.

George Washington Statue in Waterford

The only known statue of George Washington wearing his British Uniform stands in a park in Waterford, having been moved from its original location in the middle of the main road. Presque Isle Chapter sponsored the statue's creation and placement in 1922, and many members of Presque Isle Chapter, DAR, along with other Pennsylvania Daughters participated in the Centennial Celebration for the statue.

The Washington Statue commemorates a 21-year-old George Washington's visit as an emissary of the British Army, with the purpose of convincing the French to depart from Fort Le Boeuf. Young George was the first British officer to complete the journey to Fort Le Boeuf on this mission from Virginia.

Education

Community Classroom

Presque Isle Chapter, DAR supports the Sarah Reed Children's Center which was created by one of our Chapter Founders in 1898.

Members provide wrapped gifts for the children spending Christmas at the Center, collect items for school supplies, and help stock the campus with books for children aged 7-17.

The chapter also works to assist other local schools in gathering school supplies and books for students.
